I think Pepper really tries to have a social life, just like I think she really tries to establish distinct boundaries between her work life and her home life. But, that said, I don't think she's very sucessful at either of these things.

I imagine that her job is very long hours, weekends, holidays, and that in itself doesn't lend well to having a regular social life with girl friends and dating and all the other things that would be classified as one. Plans are hard to make and keep, unless Tony happens to be out of town, and even when they are, she's likely very tired at the end of the day and would rather curl up on a couch with some popcorn and watch something stupid than deal with more people.

A social life to her would definitely feel like another job, forcing herself to get out there and mingle. Not that she doesn't have one at all. She has lunch dates and shopping with Janet, coffee with Natasha. She went to the museum with Steve. I just don't think it's a very active one.

I think on a subconscious, too, she is also self-sabotaging about the biggest part of any attempt at a social life: dating. Because, let's face it, there's some small (big) part of her that would like Tony to be in a place where they can move into a relationship.

So basically, yes, but not a very active one.

How has being mind-controlled changed you as an assassin agent, Clint? IF IT HAS.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT, LOKI.

The biggest thing it's shaken in Clint, for me, is his confidence in himself. This was a man who was so sure of himself, and had every reason to be. He was an expert marksman, rarely missing a target, and an agent with such trust of SHIELD that he could go and recruit a Russian spy into the organization and Fury would just accept it. He was not only part of the team, but a valued part of it.

And now, people at SHIELD still (well, not right now) look at him like a man who has killed countless other agents, who is susceptible to brainwashing and turning against them at any moment. He definitely thinks they think he's broken, and should be replaced. More than that, he thinks some small part of him is broken. He's never quite sure what thoughts are his own and couldn't possibly be some small nugget of thought left over from Loki's brainwashing.

This is probably what Natasha feels all of the time, but he isn't as young and flexible as his partner. He's an old man, comparatively, and he's very much stuck in his ways. So some stray thought is enough to shake him into believing that Loki could still be there, in his head, and he worries too that at any possible time he could just--not be himself again. And if it happens next time, who is to say who will get hurt?

So, without all the rambling, definitely his confidence in himself and his own instincts.

I once read a fic that talked about this sort of abuse always taking something from you, and Natasha claimed that for Clint it was his confidence. He asked her what it was for her, and she said 'everyone tells me it's trust' and he asks her if they're right. And she says, 'probably. but that's what everyone tells me'.

Which I thought was interesting and clever and I actually started this comment to ask if I'd linked you that fic because if not I should find it for you.

What is Clint's relationship to his bow?

Natasha has some experience with mind control, which Clint knows about, and now so does Clint. Does this change anything in how he looks at her?

Related, in the movie he responds to her by saying 'Do you know that? Is that what you know?', and in one of our scenes Clint talked about how it was different - how does Clint see his experience as the same as what Natasha's seen, and how different?

How does Clint respond to the idea of Amora?

For both characters:

I have a line of Natasha's I struggle with - it's her claiming to Clint that she's been compromised. I have spent a ridiculous amount of time working out headcanon for what that means. Do you have any lines of Clint's/Pepper's that you've had to similarly work out? If so, what is it and what's the headcanon?

Pepper. Where are you and Tony and why?

What is your reaction to the whole heap of stuff Natasha threw on you the other day - and/or to the fact that Tony hadn't shared any of it?

but I like this, that she might try, and isn't the stereotypical xcore career woman who HAS NO TIME FOR PEOPLE only scheduling meetings. Pepper is a pretty awsm character generally.

Pepper is kind of on the outside looking in of a lot of what goes on in terms of SHIELD and the Avengers. Does this bother her? Does she prefer it?

Do you mean, would she like to be shot at daily by aliens and gods and resurrected Nazis? No, she does not. She very much prefers not being an Avenger, and isn't cut from the same self-sacrificing cloth as most of the team.

I mean, obviously she does things for other people *coughtonycough*, but she doesn't get any thrill or excitement from danger, nor does she think she's particularly good at anything that would put her in danger.

In fact, she knows she's not. She's brought this up with Fury before when he put out recruitment vibes, that she's not SHIELD (or Avengers) material. She can't fire a gun, she can't fight crime. Her competency is very focused on what she does now, and on business.

So, no. She is not bothered by not being an Avenger or SHIELD. She does like being on the outside of it, especially since it gives her a chance to lend support in little ways that she /can/, like going and shmoozing in D.C. or making phone calls, or obtaining permits and contracting a re-vamp of a mansion.

You probably want more of an answer than that, huh?

Sure, Pepper has been tempted before to put on a suit and fly around and save Iron Man when he's been particularly stupid and in danger. But, she's also not stupid. She has no training in--anything. Not even in mixed martial arts. She really doesn't belong in a suit, and she knows that.

Instead, she just gets to stay on the ground and worry, and that is the only reason she is tempted. She hates having to stand around and worry.

I have recently read fic involving the Avengers needing administrative staff and I approve of this idea because then I could make Darcy part of it and we could RP.

What did Pepper want to be when she grew up? How did she end up in this position?

When she was in high school, she wanted to be an artist. Or an art dealer. Something where she could wear gorgeous clothes and be classy and sophisticated. She also thought about being a journalist.

Of course, then she got to college and started taking classes, and her attention caught on financing of all things. She changed dreams, plans forming to become a banker on Wall Street. Something where she could make a lot of money and live comfortably. Of course, she put a resume into a Stark Industries booth at a college job fair.

She got hired into their financial department as a clerk, worked long, unglamorous hours, and eventually got hired to Tony's PA.

Pepper. How many fabulous shoes do you own?

Clint. Uhm. Actually, for a spy/assassin Clint has a very laid back sort of charm that is exhibited in the films when he isn't busy being MIND CONTROLLED, especially compared to some of the more paranoid agents. You've talked about how Loki affected his confidence. But, I'm curious about what you think of that aspect of his personality balanced against SUPER SPY habits.

How does she see Tony at this point?

This is going to be rambley, ok? Ok.

I think she sees Tony Stark as—Tony Stark. She never actually sees him as her boss, no matter how she refers to him. Sure, he is in paper and name, but he doesn’t really seem to be in reality. She’s the one that bosses him around in some things, for all that she runs his errands and takes his orders. It just doesn’t seem like a clear cut boss/employee thing.

She doesn’t quite see him as a friend, though there is certainly hints of that. She does have friendly concern for him, and wants him to be healthy. She does try to make herself available for conversations. (Though not when she’s trying to run a company.)

So, she sees him as he is. Reckless, charming, self-absorbed and narcissistic Tony Stark. She doesn’t see him as some sort of superhero, though he obviously is one, in some ways. She does think that he seems to be getting better with the new responsibilities, the suit, but not in a way that is like, smack you in the face better.

I thought I’d have more to say on this, but I think it would be repetitive. And even harder to follow.

What about the rest of the Avengers? The Avengers mansion project? What does she think about that?

I think she’s said this to a few people, but she does think the Avengers are important. Not just for the world, but she thinks, more importantly, that they are good for Tony Stark.

Not that she doesn’t think they are good for the world. I mean, the world is facing issues that it has never seen before, and never encountered. If it weren’t for the Avengers stepping up and filling that gap in their defense, there would be a lot more death and destruction, and good men putting themselves in danger that they’re no way able to handle. The Avengers are saving people by doing what they do.

But, she thinks they are also saving Tony Stark. They are putting him on a team and making him play with others, and they are giving /him/ safety and backup. Because let’s be honest, even without the Avengers, Tony Stark would be trying to take these things on by himself, as Iron Man. Because he believes that he can do anything, and one day he is going to realize he can’t. Or at least, that’s what Pepper believes.

So she’s grateful for them, on a citizen-level and a personal-level.

Now, as people, individually?

She finds Steve Rogers to be admirable and handsome, if a little shy and awkward. She feels a lot of sympathy for his position, being in a world he no longer recognizes with none of his friends. And also the shit that he’s getting from Tony, and she feels responsible for making up for Stark’s attitude.

She has a lot of respect for Natasha, professionally and personally. There are moments of awkward uncomfortableness with her, since she realizes that she’s no where in Natasha’s league and she feels like the other woman might judge her for her choices. But, definitely a lot of respect.

Bruce is a little harder for her to read, in the times she’s talked with him. She’s not sure about him, except maybe he needs a haircut.

Thor might be her favorite, to be honest. He’s forthright, nice, friendly, and quick with a laugh. He is easy to please and easy to read, for being an alien.

She likes Vance. She doesn’t actually feel that much pity for him, though there is some. Mostly, he’s so cute and adorable, she just wants to help him, so much.

Just how much SHIELD classified information does she have that she shouldn't?

Her? Why would she have any classified information? (a lot. Between Natasha and Stark--. She has more than Darcy.)
